Proceedings vs Journal Manuscripts

Imagination-Ideas-Innovations

Proceedings Manuscripts and Journal Manuscripts

The information below applies exclusively to the PreScientist24 Student (K–Undergraduate) Publication Platform.

Before writing your manuscript, it is important to understand the difference between a Proceedings Manuscript and a Journal Manuscript, as PreScientist24 publishes both types of scholarly work.

Proceedings Manuscript

A Proceedings Manuscript is a peer-reviewed publication that allows students to share their imagination, creative ideas, innovations, community activities, educational experiences, and other scholarly work that may not yet represent a complete research study.

Journal Manuscript

A Journal Manuscript is a peer-reviewed scholarly publication that presents original or scholarly work, including beginning research projects, science fair and innovation projects, preliminary research, substantial research conducted by experienced students, original research articles, review articles, capstone projects, honors projects, and other academic work that makes a meaningful contribution to learning and understanding within a particular field of study.

As a student, you are not expected to make groundbreaking scientific discoveries. However, your manuscript should demonstrate curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and a clear understanding of the topic. A meaningful intellectual contribution may include conducting a well-designed experiment, analyzing and interpreting data, reviewing and synthesizing existing information, proposing an innovative idea or solution, evaluating a community or social issue, or presenting a new perspective supported by scientific evidence.

The primary goal is to deepen understanding, develop research and communication skills, and contribute thoughtful ideas that may benefit your school, community, or the broader field of study because you are the future, and the world is waiting for you.

A Practical Way to Distinguish Them

A simple way to understand the difference is:

  • Proceedings manuscripts answer: “What did I learn, create, observe, or experience?”
  • Journal manuscripts answer: “What new knowledge or meaningful insight did my research contribute?”

We hope this explanation helps you better understand the distinction between proceedings and journal manuscripts. This framework also encourages younger students to begin publishing through proceedings while providing a natural pathway toward more rigorous journal publications as their research and writing skills develop.

Why Are They Different?

Although both proceedings and journal manuscripts communicate scholarly work, they differ in purpose, depth, review process, and publication format. Since PreScientist24 publishes both journals and proceedings, it is important for student authors to understand these distinctions.

Summary: Which Is More Appropriate for Students?

For the educational mission of PreScientist24, both publication types serve important purposes and are appropriate for students at different stages of learning and research.

Proceedings Manuscript

A proceedings manuscript is designed to share ideas, projects, experiences, innovations, or preliminary scholarly work. It is especially appropriate for students who are beginning to learn scientific writing.

Examples include:

  • Imagination and creative ideas
  • Innovation projects
  • Community and social activities
  • Literature reviews
  • Pilot studies
  • Educational experiences

The emphasis is on learning, communication, creativity, and encouraging participation rather than producing a complete research study.

Journal Manuscript

A journal manuscript is a complete scientific article that reports original research or provides a comprehensive scholarly review.

It typically includes:

  • A clearly defined research question
  • Background supported by published literature
  • Detailed methodology
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusions
  • References

The emphasis is on generating new knowledge, developing strong research skills, and making a meaningful scholarly contribution appropriate to the student's educational level.
