Vasken Aposhian, a prominent toxicologist. Prof. Aposhian completed a post-doctoral fellowship with Nobel Laureate Dr. Arthur Kornberg at Stanford University. Together, Aposhian and Kornberg published “Enzymatic Synthesis of Deoxyribonucleic Acid” in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Kornberg later won the Nobel Prize for discovering the biological mechanism of DNA synthesis.
Dr. Chowdhury earned his Ph.D. in Science from Jadavpur University’s School of Environmental Studies in India, under the guidance of Prof. Dipankar Chakraborti, a leading arsenic researcher. Prof. Chakraborti pioneered arsenic research in the Ganga-Meghna-Brahmaputra Basin and dedicated his career to addressing arsenic contamination issues in West Bengal, India, and Bangladesh.
Dr. Chowdhury has made significant contributions to environmental science, particularly in arsenic research. He has over 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, conference papers, and abstracts, with notable works in journals like Nature. As of February 23, 2024, his research has garnered 6,823 citations, with 21 publications cited over 100 times and one cited over 1,326 times. He has 40,171 reads, a research interest score of 3,363, and an h-index of 35, placing him in the top 2% of ResearchGate members globally 25 million members.
One of his notable publications, “Arsenic in Asia-Water at Its Worst,” was highlighted in the “Science Selections” section of the EHP journal (May 2000, Volume 108, Number 5, Page A224) by Karen Breslin and featured on the cover page of that issue.
Dr. Chowdhury is an experienced mentor and leader with extensive experience in training and managing undergraduate and graduate students, visitors from national and international institutes/universities, and postdoctoral fellows in laboratory practices. As a Co-director and Manager(Research), he has overseen the operation of the Geochemistry Lab under the Geochronology and Thermochronology program in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona, collaborating with Prof. Peter Reiners.
From 1994 to 1998, he served as a Research Officer in the Environmental Health Program (EHP) at the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR, B), working on various water and sanitation projects across Bangladesh.
Dr. Chowdhury’s research has earned him several awards and fellowships. In 2002, he received a Research Fellowship at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Ministry of the Environment, Japan, focusing on environmental planning for global protection. He also received Research Fellowships in 2001 and 2000 from the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS), Ministry of the Environment, Japan, for global environmental protection.
Dr. Chowdhury received the Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarship (2000-2001) for Doctoral Studies and a Research Fellowship (1999-2001) from the University Grants Commission in New Delhi, India. He was on the Dean’s Honor List at Dhaka University, Bangladesh, from 1985 to 1996, where he completed his B.S. (Honors) and M.S. degrees in Biochemistry.
Dr. Chowdhury serves as a peer reviewer for reputable journals, including Scientific Reports (Nature) and Biological Trace Element Research.
In addition to his research achievements, he is actively involved in community engagement and synergistic activities:
1. Assisting students with free teaching and distributing educational materials.
2. Guiding 6th to 10th graders online on how to conduct scientific research projects.
3. Creating an “Imagination Club” to enhance students’ imaginative abilities.
